I met Melissa when I taught middle school with her at Rolfe. Since the teaching life is pretty solitary (usually you’re working in the classroom all day with your children and a 21 minute lunch doesn’t leave much time to socialize) we weren’t able to talk much. She is an AMAZING teacher and works SO hard going above and beyond to make each day interesting and fun for her students. She is also a fantastic person!
Bret and Melissa met at BlackFinn Restaurant in Richmond, Va. They actually met 4 years to the day before they were married! After their first date they went home and immediately planned to meet the next day! Some may say they knew since the first few minutes! Brunch the next day went even better than meeting the evening before and then it was history in the making!
Melissa is from Peru and a lot of her family made the trip for the big day! It was such a beautiful meshing of cultures and we all enjoyed tasting the multitude of Peruvian and Australian treats they had at their dessert table!
This room at Mankin Mansion where the girls got ready couldn’t be any prettier! Melissa’s dress complimented her shape so beautifully as well. Isn’t her smile contagious? Love the fun she had with her girls while they were all getting ready!
Bret and his guys got ready for the day in the game room at Mankin Mansion. It’s actually under the main house and it really does have lots of games! Bret’s son Kilby was intended to be a big part of their day as they were all becoming a family so there are lots of sweet shots of him throughout the day as well!
Melissa had a very special guest at her wedding, her 100 year old grandmother who we captured plenty of pictures of! She not only is absolutely stunning at her age but also quite a fun soul! She was a pleasure to talk to.
Bret and Melissa’s officiant knew them personally which is always a big plus. He was able to speak to the amazing bond that they have and how their very different personalities are just perfect for each other. Melissa is a planner and likes things to be in order and Bret is a fly by the seat of his pants kind of guy! She brings him order and he brings her happy, fun-loving chaos! I especially loved the few moments after the group portraits where Bret was able to calm Melissa down from feeling stressed about the day. It went perfectly and he helped her to see how amazing it all was and take it all in by living in the moment! (My husband certainly has to do this for me at times too – so it’s such a joy to see other couples that share our same values.)
I LOVED that Melissa’s bridesmaids all wore different shades of her color and still coordinated so well together! I love that this is a new trend and I think it makes for SUCH great bridesmaids and bridal party shots! It helped that these were some of the nicest girls I’ve ever worked with too!
