Kellen and Phil first sort-of met at a party at college when one of his friends came up to her and asked if she would dance with that guy, and pointed to Phil, and she said no. Then he asked again himself at another party and she said yes. They also lived in dorms that were next to each other and would occasionally see each other walking to class. They started dating in the fall of 2006, broke up for about a year after graduation, but got back together and have been together now for a total of 6 years!
Kellen was on a family vacation in Emerald Isle, NC and Phil came at about 9am on July 4th to surprise her after he said he could not come on the vacation. That night, they were watching the fireworks on the beach with her family and he asked her to marry him while they were sitting on a blanket on the beach. Kellen’s mom smacked him on the shoulder because he snuck asking when they were not paying attention. One of Kellen’s sisters then made Phil get up and get down on one knee so she could take pictures. They went offshore fishing the next day to celebrate!
Kellen and Phil decided on Norfolk Botanical Gardens for their beautiful outdoor wedding. They use the Rose Garden and Rose Garden Hall for their ceremony and reception. It was a little cloudy that morning and threatening rain but it cleared up and became a beautiful day! We were so excited to see all that she had done for the reception. You will see later in the post details of her handmade centerpieces, cornhole boards, and much more!
Phil and his groomsmen got ready on another floor of the hotel so we were able to capture some of their “getting ready” shots as well. They were all good sports as we shot while they quickly dressed before the ceremony. They each had adorable flasks with the engraving “game over” and their wedding date. Such a funny sentiment, but really the fun is just beginning. Kellen and Phil have such a happy and fun future ahead of them!
Kellen and Phil enjoy doing outdoorsy stuff (fishing, kayaking, hiking, mini golf, and playing in the water at the river/beach) together. They of course, wanted to have their wedding outside as well and it was a perfect day for it! Not even that hot for a June wedding!
They included their dog Dunkin in the engagement session. I LOVE meeting the fur members of a family as well and he was such a sweet well-mannered pup!
Bride and groom portraits from the day are always so important to make sure there is time for. These are, at the end of the day, the ones you will frame, print as canvases, and be your most treasured keepsakes! You wouldn’t even know they were surrounded by gnats! 😉
The toasts from Kellen’s sisters were very loving and emotional. Not a dry eye in sight!
